Howard C. Marmon

The old Marmon Estate as it looks today.

'Hemlock Hedges" was owned by one of Avery County's most famous citizens, Howard Marmon.  Marmon was the inventor of the Marmon automobile, first a racing car when auto racing "was in its swaddling clothes," and later a luxury automobile comparable with the Packard and Rolls Royce.  As a racing car it was "the talk of the motor world," and held a speed record of over 70 miles per hour.  The Marmon factories closed in 1932.
